How has APU transformed you?

My experience as a student at APU transformed the foundation of my faith. At APU, I was challenged to put my faith into action and was encouraged to not be afraid to ask the tough questions. My professors educated and equipped me for success in the professional world, and also showed me how to exude Christ-likeness in every facet of life. From the moment I stepped on campus many years ago, it was clear to me that APU’s faculty and staff wanted nothing less than to provide me with the tools necessary to allow me to further the Gospel into the professional world.

Which activities at APU have you most enjoyed being a part of?

Being really big on athletics, I had an amazing time participating in most of the intramural sports that APU had to offer. As a transfer student and commuter, I found that intramurals were a great way to build friendships and get plugged into the APU community. I also loved the fact that chapel was three days a week! The worship was always amazing and I always knew I could look forward to being spiritually challenged by one of our awesome guest speakers or campus pastors.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

Prayerfully seek which university the Lord is directing you to and don’t take the task of searching for a school lightly. Dive in headfirst! Visit websites, take tours, talk to students, set up meetings with representatives, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. This is one of the most exciting times in your life, so enjoy the process and give every effort to find the place that you feel most comfortable calling home!

How do you spend your free time?

I love to go on good, long, and challenging hikes, swim on a hot day, relieve stress at the gym, spend time in the Word and in prayer, watch a good sad movie, go on adventures with friends, and go home for some of Mama’s delicious home cooking!

How has APU transformed you?

It’s hard to not write a novel about how I’ve been transformed by APU—not just as an institution, but by what APU stands for and how it advocates for its students. When I was a student at APU, the institution was a space for all my questions. Whether I was wrestling through questions regarding my faith or the path in front of me, I felt supported through the many facets APU has to offer. During my sophomore year, I had the honor of studying abroad in Quito, Ecuador, and this experience was hands-down one of the most transformational experiences of my life. After I graduated, I was able to return to Quito as a staff member with the study abroad organization, and my passion for the development of college students and the richness of intercultural experiences blossomed. APU supported me during my time as a student and propelled me into opportunities for growth and discovery after graduation as well.

Which activities at APU have you most enjoyed being a part of?

I loved being involved in student leadership opportunities as a student. I was able to work within APU’s orientation program to help welcome incoming students to campus. I shared experiences with communities in Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador with other APU students, which is where my passion for cross-cultural awareness and development began. Ultimately, my passions started and were developed through my activities at APU.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

It’s okay if this process feels scary! I am a firm believer that means you’re invested in your future. In the fear, though, don’t do it alone! Reach out to your admissions representative (shameless plug), celebrate with your friends and family, and let those around you into this journey with you. You were not made to do this by yourself.

How do you spend your free time?

I LOVE the sun (classic Southern California girl), so I love hanging out at the beach when I can with friends and fam! I love a good, long drive listening to music so loud I am convinced my speakers will blow out any second. I love being around people, so any activity with people I love sounds like a good time to me!

How has APU transformed you?

APU developed me into the person and leader I am today. Throughout my four years on this campus, I learned to embrace the way that God created me rather than trying to be a copy of someone else. No one is better at being you than you are, and as simple as that sounds, it really is game changing!

Which activities at APU have you most enjoyed being a part of?

APU has given me so many opportunities I never thought I’d get! I spent a semester abroad in South Africa and went on several Mexico Outreach trips during my time as a student. Because of these experiences, I’m a huge advocate for international immersion. I also joined Men’s Chorale, one of our choirs on campus; it was something I never thought I’d do but ended up absolutely loving!

What advice would you give to prospective students?

Give it all you’ve got! College—and really life itself—is an experience where you get what you put into it. Find things that YOU love and people who support you and run full speed ahead with them! It will all be worth it when you see how far you’ve come and look back on all of the many fond memories you’ve made along the way!

How do you spend your free time?

I love music, and you can almost always find me listening to my favorite records, singing, or playing electric guitar. I also love basketball, Star Wars, and a good meal or cup of coffee with family and friends.

Graduated from APU: 2018 and 2021
Degrees: BA in English, MS in College Counseling and Student Development
Hometown: Inglewood, CA

How has APU transformed you?

APU has helped me discover my passions for equity, caring for students, and seeing everyone in the image of God. One of my favorite verses, Micah 6:8, calls us to “act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God,” and my experiences inside and outside of the classroom have prepared me to embody this verse daily.

Which activities at APU have you most enjoyed being a part of?

Being an Alpha leader my sophomore year was a fantastic experience! It was exciting to play a role in guiding a group of incoming students throughout their first year at APU and build community together. I was also able to study abroad in Ecuador during my junior year. It taught me the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone and expanding my worldview.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

My advice to prospective students is to get to know your professors! They truly care about your personal and academic development. As an undergraduate and graduate student, I was given invitations to dinner at a few of my professors’ houses and it showed their genuine interest in us and great cooking skills!

How do you spend your free time?

I am a self-proclaimed “foodie,” so checking out cool restaurants and coffee shops with friends and family is a must. I also love reading, so you can always catch me hanging out somewhere with a book. I also enjoy listening to music and making playlists for my friends.

How has APU transformed you?

Throughout my time at APU, I have been transformed with a stronger foundation in my Christian faith, and I feel more equipped with the words of God.

Which activities at APU have you most enjoyed being a part of?

I really enjoy interacting with students, especially with international students. Many international students want to share their new life journey at APU. Listening, sharing, praying, and spending time together is one of my utmost favorite activities at APU.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

Once you have been admitted to APU, find ways to connect with others, such as joining social groups and clubs. Take advantage of the orientation session, which gives new students perspective and information on what to look forward to during their time at APU. It also helps students to become familiar with new environments and cultures. Also, do not hesitate to reach out to your professor whenever you feel that you do not understand something. Professors want to help and be interactive with students’ journeys at APU.

How do you spend your free time?

I spend my free time listening to, searching for, and studying different genres and time periods of Western music.

How has APU transformed you?

I’ve learned that I’m capable and have a beautiful story. Our journeys are all different, and at APU the faculty and staff invest in students. They challenged me to try new experiences and continually encouraged my gifts. At APU I learned that I wasn’t just another student but a woman gifted to make a difference for the Kingdom of God. I learned the impact we make doesn’t have to be big, but it can be a reminder to put Jesus first and seek to love others well. I am thankful for the experiences and people that have grown me into who I am today!

Which activities at APU have you most enjoyed being a part of?

Since I was very disconnected from my high school, I was quite involved at APU. I worked as a teacher’s assistant and tutor, and I loved it! In these roles, I developed my passion for education and learned equitable strategies to support students. Outside of education, I led a small group on campus and was a student leader in our Kaleo Chapel. These experiences grew my faith and challenged me to seek Jesus daily.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

Take a deep breath and remember everything will work out. As much as college can be exciting, we understand the stress that comes with choosing a school. So, explore and be curious. APU offers many opportunities to help you see yourself as a future APU Cougar. I recommend taking a tour of the campus, sitting in a class, or attending one of our events. Please reach out to me—my hope is to make this process as easy as possible for you. I am here to support you!

How do you spend your free time?

In my free time, you will find me spending time with my loved ones and pouring into youth at my church. I love relaxing at the beach, hiking, biking, camping, and finding any way to be outside in the sunshine. I am an avid cook, so you will find me whipping up a new recipe in the kitchen to feed others.

Graduated from UC Irvine: 2017
Degree: BA in Psychology and Criminology, Law and Society

What advice would you give to prospective students?

My advice to prospective students is to be patient with yourself and with others. Everyone around you is learning and growing; you will make mistakes and so will others. However, these mistakes are vital to your construction as a person, so allow yourself to learn from them. Also, please utilize your resources at the university. Seek out your admissions representative, counselor, or professor—everyone is delighted to help. We are here to provide the space and opportunity for confusion and questions. Remember, we are here to serve you!

How do you spend your free time?

I love spending time with my family and loved ones. I also enjoy dancing and coming up with different dance routines. Specifically, I enjoy choreographing quinceañera dances with my mom. I also enjoy reading and learning. I find research articles and books on human psychology informative and constructive.

How has APU transformed you?

APU has helped shape me into the person I am today. I was challenged mentally and spiritually as a student on campus. Most importantly, APU is somewhere I call home. From the first time I stepped on campus, I knew APU was the place for me.

Which activities at APU have you most enjoyed being a part of?

By far my most enjoyable activity at APU was intramural sports and the weekly hoop sessions in the Felix Event Center. This is how I made a lot of my connections on campus.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

My best advice I can offer any student is to be open to new opportunities and experiences. APU has so many wonderful opportunities to offer, from clubs and activities to mission trips and internships. I believe that if you put a lot in, you will receive a lot in return.

How do you spend your free time?

I enjoy spending time with my friends and family. This includes game nights, going bowling, going to the driving range, watching the Dodgers and Lakers, and of course eating good food.
