Q & A with Jessica...

How has APU transformed you?
I actually had no intention of coming to APU. My family and I stopped here on my way to visit UCLA, where I had planned on attending. I set foot on the campus and the Lord told me to trust Him and go here. The decision was hard even though the call was clear. But here, I was able to hone in on my call and my gifts for racial reconciliation and leadership. I watched God open huge doors for me to walk through as He was indulging my mind with vivid and clear concepts that were later put into practice on campus. The Lord brought me to an environment where those in leadership supported students and gave them the opportunity to walk in what the Lord had called them to do, even if it was the road less traveled. I came to APU trusting that God would take care of me, and I finished my APU undergraduate career knowing that I served a God that moves beyond all logic and reason.
What activities at APU have you most enjoyed being a part of?
That is a difficult question for me to answer as I was involved in a lot and enjoyed every minute of it! I absolutely loved the Multi-Ethnic Leadership Scholarship Program where I was challenged, stretched, educated, and nurtured. I had so much fun being a part of the Black Student Awareness club on campus and one of the founders of the Black Women’s Fellowship. I found great encouragement in being at the fore front of the Women’s Resource Center and watching it move from an idea to an actual office. I enjoyed performing with Chozen Hip-Hop team and the UMOJA step team. Lastly, I absolutely enjoyed my time interning in the Office of Chapel Programs, serving on ASB, and working with the university diversity training team, Imago Dei. I learned a wealth of knowledge from holding these positions in regards to the structure and the foundational thinking of APU. Lastly, I thoroughly enjoyed my semester abroad with the Azusa Oxford Semester. I traveled all over Europe and was challenged by some of the greatest minds in my field today! I appreciated the vast amounts of opportunities that were offered to me during my time here on campus.
What advice would you give to prospective students?
To understand that there is a university for everyone and a specific path that God has devised for all of us. Make sure to have a goal and an end result in mind but hold your plans loosely as your life is subject to change in the blink of an eye! Be open an willing to be used and you will be amazed at the course that your life will take!
How do you spend your free time?
I am a gym rat and work out all the time. I also dance and read all the time! I also love to go to the movies, film screenings, plays, musicals, museums, basically anything centered around the performing and visual arts. I am also a huge family person, so when I am doing any of these activities, I am usually with at least one of my family members.
