Spiritual Development
Azusa Pacific University is committed to the spiritual development of every student. This mission is carried out through the involvement of students in several areas of emphases: chapel, Bible classes, discipleship, student ministries, community service projects, and world missions.
Chapel: Sharing God’s Goodness
Chapel and academics are the core of APU’s Christian liberal arts education. As a member of the APU community, your participation in chapel is a part of the university’s rich experience. Students learn scriptural truth from a wide variety of engaging and entertaining speakers and Christian Leaders, and are encouraged to deepen their relationship with Christ during worship services. Members of APU’s Christian community are also encouraged to celebrate God’s goodness by sharing their faith with one another through praise, prayer, and presentation, and are challenged to serve God by taking their faith, hope, and love into the community and the world. Visit www.apu.edu/chapel for more information.
Bible Classes: Deepening Faith
Every student at APU is required to take 18-21 units of Bible classes. This requirement is prorated for incoming transfer students. Ranging from required courses such as Luke/Acts and Foundations of Ministry, to a variety of electives like Life and Teachings of Jesus, Contemporary Christian Thought, Church History, and more, APU Bible classes provide an intellectual foundation for defending the faith. See the Undergraduate General Studies Requirements for more information.
D Group Ministries: Growing Together
At APU, we are committed to our growth toward Christ-likeness. Those serious about following Jesus seek to model the command in Mark 12:30-31, to love God and love others. The support of others is a necessity, as it assists us in living out this scripture consistantly. Made up of three to five students who meet together regularly for accountability, bible study, fellowship, prayer, and service, D Groups help people to incorporate this command into their everyday lives. These groups are designed to help you grow in your love for God and for others.
Ministry and Service: Life More Abundant
The service component of the APU experience assumes an understanding that growing faith is active faith, and active faith involves working alongside others to demonstrate the good news of God's inclusive, empowering love. A student's service may correlate with his or her academic preparation for a chosen profession, or it may be an opportunity to try something different. The Office of Ministry and Service (MAS) encourages students along this path of service, providing a catalyst and support to them as they serve others and experience the "more abundant life" that Jesus professed and modeled (John 10:10). Students' involvement in these ministry opportunities satisfies the graduation requirement of 120 credits of ministry and service. Visit www.apu.edu/mas for more information.
World Missions: Reaching Out
From Mexico Outreach involving hundreds of APU students and more than 6,000 high school students from around North America, to the Office of World Missions which sends nearly 20 teams traveling the world every summer to places like India, Mozambique, Brazil, and China, APU gives students a number of opportunities for worldwide outreach. Students in teams of 5 to 15 prepare for their cultural experience through an intense training course during the spring semester and minister at their chosen location during the summer.
