General Studies Guidelines

The following document is designed to simplify your course selection and facilitate fulfillment of the General Studies requirements for Azusa Pacific University. The guidelines are a general overview of what types of courses will satisfy APU’s General Studies requirements. It is in your best interest to follow and complete these guidelines of suggested courses.

General Studies Transfer Plans

The following are NOT articulation agreements but are tools to aid students in knowing which courses APU will accept to fulfill General Studies requirements.

IGETC/CSU GE

APU accepts the completed IGETC or CSU GE as fulfilling the lower-division General Studies requirements. However, the student will need complete these provisions as part of or in addition to their completed IGETC or CSU GE.

  • Students will need to meet the foreign language requirement: two semesters of the same language at the college level.
  • Students will need to meet the Health Education and Fitness for Life requirements.
  • Students will need to complete a math course with at least a prerequisite of Intermediate Algebra (course must be from school’s math department).

All APU students will be required to complete the requisite number of biblical studies and upper-division elective courses. In the cases of both the CSU GE and the IGETC, the certificate must be complete and obtained from the respective community college before the student matriculates to APU. Students who do not receive certification of completion will be evaluated by standard course-to-course articulation and will follow the APU General Studies program. Students who have completed minimum of 60 units and the IGETC will satisfy nine units of biblical studies at APU and nine units of upper-division General Studies course.

Course-to-Course Articulation

Course-to-course articulation agreements identify individual courses or sequences of courses at a sending institution that are comparable to, or "acceptable in lieu of," a corresponding course or sequence of courses at APU. These include not only General Studies requirements, but also lower-division requirements for a major or minor.

Please note: No Tranfer Inquiry Form is needed for courses that are transferred from institutions with articulation agreements with APU.

Major Articulation Plans (for prospective APU students only)

APU has partnered with several California community colleges to construct four-year plans to help you finish your degree on time. These Major Articulation Plans (M.A.P.s) are designed for students who plan to transfer to APU after taking two years of coursework at a community college. Students who follow a M.A.P. can be assured that every course will transfer to APU and meet either a major requirement or a General Studies requirement.

APU is continually constructing additional M.A.P.s with more community colleges. Please check back again soon if you do not see the school you are looking for, or contact the Office of the Undergraduate Registrar for additional information.

AP, IB, and CLEP Credit

Students may earn credit through three competency exams recognized by the university: Advanced Placement (AP) tests, International Baccalaureate (IB), and the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). There is no maximum number of credits that may be accumulated from these tests. However, no CLEP credit will be granted in a student’s final semester.
