Tennis Facility

Conceptual Rendering

Representing a significant investment in athletic facilities at Azusa Pacific University, an all new 8-court tennis facility will be located on West Campus, adjacent to the Cougar Soccer Complex. Due to open in January 2009, in time for the new season, the courts will represent a big step forward for the nationally recognized APU men’s and women’s tennis programs.

This new facility will build on the impressive achievements, in both regional and national competition, of the Azusa Pacific tennis teams, which have played home games at rented off-site community facilities. The men’s program has advanced to 11 consecutive National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) tournaments, claiming the men’s national title twice (2005 and 2007), and the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) title nine times. The women’s program won the GSAC title in 2000 and has advanced to 10 consecutive NAIA national tournaments.

Under the inspired leadership of Head Coach Mark Bohren (named GSAC Coach of the Year for seven straight seasons and Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year in three of the past five seasons), home courts will enable student-athletes to practice more readily and enhance the ability of APU coaching staff to recruit superior athletes to a winning program with a winning facility.

The courts will not just benefit the two athletic teams, but also the wider campus community of students, faculty, and staff through organized physical education courses and recreational activities. It is hoped that the new facility will enable the provision of programs to the community through tennis clinics, camps, and lessons. APU students and faculty will be able to connect with local youth, developing the sport of tennis as well as supporting the university’s cornerstone mission to serve the community.

Azusa Pacific University has secured gifts and pledges representing nearly 80 percent of the $1.1 million required for phase one, and is actively seeking the remaining funds. If you would like to discuss a gift to this milestone project for the athletics program, or learn more about the project, please contact the Office of University Advancement at (626) 815-5333 or development@apu.edu.
