Monique Caballero

Monique Caballero still does not know how the APU admissions counselor obtained her name and number. Nonetheless, she received a call one day, inviting her to apply to Azusa Pacific University. She had never considered applying to a Christian college, but when she arrived on campus, she began to cry. Monique knew this was where she needed to be, yet she was not prepared to move away from her home in Northern California. “I spent the summer arguing with God, but I know now that He knows best,” she said. “I have found God for myself here. He's not my parents' God anymore. He’s mine.”

Each year since she arrived, Monique has received the Multi-Ethnic Leadership (M.E.L.) Scholarship, which has proven to be a blessing beyond the financial assistance it provides. “The group of M.E.L. scholars has been such a support to me,” said Monique. “I arrived with culture shock, but this group of students pulled together and we support each other.”
