On Wednesday, September 26, APU will break ground on a state-of-the-art science center on West Campus. The groundbreaking ceremony will begin at 9:45 a.m. in the southeast corner of the former drive-in parking lot.
This three-story, 70,000-square foot facility will house 16 classrooms, 14 labs, 1 lecture hall, 7 smaller research labs, 36 offices, a conference room, and 2 student study breakout rooms, in addition to several small rooms for specialized use and an office for the Center for Research in Science. Additional features include an ecology pond, a greenhouse, and tissue culture, imaging, and magnetic resonance facilities for the use of faculty and students in collaborative research.
The science building falls within the expectations of APU’s comprehensive development plan which has been approved by the City of Azusa Planning Commission and City Council. The structure was designed by Los Angeles-based architecture firm, AC Martin, who also worked on the university's comprehensive development plan. Pasadena-based CW Driver will oversee the building process. Site work is expected to begin before the end of October, with building completion anticipated in May 2009.
The $54.7 million budget for the center includes site development, architects, and various fees, as well as furniture, technology, lab equipment, and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, which is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.
To celebrate this momentous building project, APU will host a day focused on scientific advancement and achievement.
