APU Faculty Authors Will Participate in Barnes & Noble Book Signing October 12, 2007 On Wednesday, November 14, five APU faculty members will participate in a book signing event at the new Barnes & Noble in Glendora. From 6-9 p.m. a reception and book signing will allow each faculty author to be recognized for their hard work and share about their book.
In addition to the book signing event, 10 percent of purchases made with an APU voucher between 9 a.m.-11 p.m will go toward the Faculty Writers' Retreat. Download the postcard and voucher here. (PDF*) The voucher excludes gift cards and membership purchases.
Meet Some of APU's Faculty Authors:
- La Verne resident Joseph Bentz, Ph.D., professor of English at APU, is the author of Silent God: Finding Him When You Can't Hear His Voice, which explores practical ways of getting the noise in our lives – work, media, mental clutter – under control, and considers how God uses silence to accomplish His purposes for us. Bentz's second book, A Son Comes Home, tells the story of a young man who returns home to face his troubled past years after his brother's tragic death. First published in 1999, this award-winning book was placed in the top ten Christian novels of the year by Booklist magazine.
- Sheila's Shop: Working-Class African-American Women Talk About Life, Love, Race, and Hair written by Azusa resident Kimberly Battle-Walters Denu, Ph.D., professor of social work at APU, takes readers into a Southern beauty parlor where working-class African-American women discuss what it means to be strong, successful, and beautiful, and what they believe others think of them.
- Diana Pavlac Glyer, Ph.D., a resident of Monrovia and professor of English at APU, will feature her book, The Company They Keep: C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien as Writers in Community, at the signing. Glyer takes readers into the smoky Oxford offices and noisy pubs where Lewis and Tolkien meet to discuss their writings, allowing us to bear witness to the collaborative process by which some of the 20th century's most popular literary works were born.
- Leadership Above the Line: A Characterbased Leadership Tool that Leads to Success for You and Your Team, written by San Dimas resident Sarah Sumner, Ph.D., professor of theology and ministry at APU, encourages leaders to lead and live “above the line” in three categories, as strategists, humanitarians, and diplomats. Sumner's book helps readers learn how to increase self-awareness, make sense of confusing situations, and motivate people.
- Steve Wilkens, Ph.D., Monrovia resident and professor theology and philosophy at APU, will be signing his most recent book, The Original Dr. Steve's Almanac of Christian Trivia. This tongue-in-cheek almanac answers questions about things you did not-but should have-learned in Sunday school. In the book are quizzes on famous biblical phrases and a guide to theology's biggest words.
