Justice Week: Faith in Action

As one of six intentionally planned “theme weeks” within Student Life, Justice Week: Faith in Action seeks to raise awareness about the connectedness of justice issues and our faith in Christ. This week of conversation, programs, chapels, and experiential learning activities offers students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to learn together how to better love God and neighbor.

Monday, January 26
• Chapel: Alexia Salvatierra, 9:30 a.m., Upper Turner Campus Center
Reverend Alexia Salvatierra, Executive Director of CLUE (Clergy of Laity united for Economic Justice) will share experience of over 20 years of interfaith and community ministry, community organizing and legislative advocacy.
• Q&A with Alexia Salvatierra, 10:45 a.m., Upper Turner Campus Center
APU faculty member, Mary Rawlings, will be moderating a question and answer session with Reverend Alexia Salvatierra, on his specific expertise in the areas of immigration, poverty, and worker’s rights and economic justice.
• Taking Your Faith Too Far or Not Far Enough?, 7:30 p.m., Los Angeles Pacific College Banquet Room
Davis Gist, California Regional Organizer for Bread of the World, will facilitate a conversation about how faith plays a role in public policy and social concerns.

Tuesday, January 27
Matheteis: Is Peace Possible?, 5:30 p.m., Los Angeles Pacific College Banquet Room
Matheteis is a monthly dinner and discussion forum that addresses a variety of issues with the goals of education and discipleship. This evening will be focused on the question “Is Peace Possible?” and will feature three panelists: Glenn Staussen (Fuller Seminary), Kurt Wurthmueller (Azusa Pacific University), and John Kisimir (World Vision).

Wednesday, January 28
• Chapel: Craig Keen, 9:30 a.m., Upper Turner Campus Center
Craig Keen, Ph.D., is a professor of systematic theology in APU's Department of Theology and Philosophy.
• Social City, 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Cougar Walk
Students will have opportunity to dialogue with various nonprofit organizations and learn about the work that they are doing locally and globally.
• Film Screening: Dying to Live, 7:30 p.m., Los Angeles Pacific College Banquet Room
This documentary takes a look at the human face of the immigrant in a topic often filled with political controversy. Small group discussion will follow the screening.

Thursday, January 29
• Just Expressions, 8 p.m., Upper Turner Campus Center
Students share their stories and showcase their work of how they have integrated their faith journeys into action through various creative mediums. Refreshments and an open mic time will be provided.

Friday, January 30
• Chapel: All Worship, 9:30 a.m., Felix Event Center
This chapel time will feature an all-worship and reflection session in the continued pursuit of integrating our faith into action.
