First-year Cougars Davon Roberts and David Burgess were named the All-GSAC men’s basketball team. Roberts, a 6-foot-5 senior out of West Covina, Calif., is fourth in the GSAC in scoring (16.2 avg) and eighth in rebounding (6.6 avg.). His finest outing came in the Cougars’ upset of No. 5-ranked Concordia when he tallied career highs of 32 points and 14 rebounds. Meanwhile, the 6-foot-10 Burgess from Irvine, Calif., averaged 9.8 points and a team-high 9.4 rebounds, second best in the GSAC this year. He was even better in GSAC games, averaging 10.7 points and 9.7 rebounds.
In addition, first-year men’s basketball head coach Justin Leslie was awarded GSAC Coach of the Year after leading the Cougars from a 3-4 start to conference play into contention for the GSAC title in yesterday’s regular-season finale. Azusa Pacific finished second in the conference, winning a GSAC-best 11 of its final 13 contests to close out the regular season.
Seniors Abby Johnson and Sarah Leathers were selected to the All-GSAC women’s basketball team. Johnson, a 6-foot-2 forward from Clarkston, Wash., ranked sixth in the GSAC in scoring (15.6 avg.) and fourth in rebounding (8.1 average). Her scoring average actually increased by half a point in the Cougars’ 20 GSAC games, including a pair of 20-point efforts against Azusa Pacific’s GSAC Postseason Tournament first-round foe California Baptist.
Leathers, a 5-foot-4 guard from Cypress, Calif., entered the season as Azusa Pacific’s career 3-point record holder, and her 79 treys this season rank as the third-highest in single-season program history. She also owns the Cougar career steals record with 361, and she needs just 5 assists to become the program’s all-time assists leader, as well. Leathers was the only Azusa Pacific player to score 30 points in a game this season, drilling a career-high 7 3-pointers in a 30-point, 7-assist effort that led the Cougars to a 78-69 home win over the NAIA’s No. 16-ranked The Master’s earlier this season.
