AZUSA, Calif. – All Davon Roberts wanted was to have basketball be fun again. After 1 year at Azusa Pacific, his final on the college level, the soft-spoken, mild-mannered forward with a deft shooting touch in the key is smiling again.

Roberts, who transferred to Azusa Pacific last summer after 3 years of playing NCAA Division I basketball, capped an outstanding 2008 senior campaign by being named NAIA All-America second team. He becomes the 30th Cougar hoopster ever to earn All-America recognition, the tenth with second-team or higher honors.

Roberts led an Azusa Pacific squad with 5 new starters and a new head coach back to the NAIA Tournament for the 13th consecutive season and into the “Elite Eight” for the fourth straight year. A complete player, the 6-foot-5 power-forward Roberts topped the Cougars in scoring (16.7 avg.), field goal percentage (.579), blocked shots (23) and assists (94). He was second on the team in rebounding (7.0 avg.) and third in steals (31).

“I may never again coach another player like Davon,” said Cougar coach Justin Leslie. “He is such a calm, cool, collected player with a natural ability to make unbelievable shots. He sees what the other team is going to give him, and then he takes advantage of it.”

Roberts scored in double-figures in 31 of the 35 games he started for the 24-11 Cougars. He had 8 20-point outings, and his performance in the upset of No. 5-ranked Concordia University on Feb. 8 was statistically one of the finest games ever by a Cougar. In that contest, Roberts tallied a career-high 32 points on 14-for-18 shooting to go along with a career-high 14 rebounds. He also had 3 assists and blocked 1 shot. In all, it was 1 of a team-high 8 double-doubles that Roberts posted on the season.

Roberts, who prepped at nearby Glendora (Calif.) High School and led the Tartans to 3 league titles, signed with Sacramento State University where he played the 2005 through 2007 seasons before transferring to Azusa Pacific.
