Whitten Named All-GSAC

May 2, 2008

AZUSA, Calif.  First-year Cougar Jen Whitten has been named All-Golden State Athletic Conference after putting together an outstanding second half of the 2008 season and leading the Cougars briefly into the NAIA national poll for the first time in 3 seasons.

A junior centerfielder out of Vacaville, Calif., Whitten batted .282 on the season with 17 RBIs, 4 doubles, 2 triples and a team-high 8 stolen bases. However, it was her play in GSAC action that garnered the attention of the conference coaches who selected the All-GSAC team. In 23 conference games this year, Whitten batted a team-high .339 that included a pair of doubles and triples.

Whitten, who transferred to Azusa Pacific this past summer from Santa Rosa (Calif.) Community College, struggled at the outset of her Cougar career, but she caught fire midway through the season, and over the final 6 weeks of play, she batted .393 (24-for-61), posting 9 multiple-hit games in the final 22 contests.

She becomes the first Cougar to earn All-GSAC recognition since Tami Carter and Lori Shimasaki earned similar honors in 2006. Whitten is 1 of 18 players named to this year’s All-GSAC team. To view the entire team and individual honors, go to the GSAC website.
