Longtime Azusa Pacific University faculty member and former Cougar football coach John Crandall passed away Saturday (Aug. 23) evening in his hometown of Wichita, Kan. Crandall, who succumbed to a 3-year battle with cancer, was 77.

Crandall was Azusa Pacific’s third football coach in program history, serving at the Cougar helm for the 1967 and 1968 seasons. He continued at the university as a professor, athletics advisor, counselor and associate dean of education before retiring after 31 years with the university.

A decorated infantryman, Crandall served in the Korean War. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Friends University, a master’s degree from Emporia State Teacher’s College and his Ph.D from the University of Southern California. He taught and coached on the high school level in Kansas before moving the college ranks and eventually Azusa Pacific.

Following his retirement from Azusa Pacific in 1998, he returned to his Midwest roots in Wichita.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ellen, and their children John, Dan, David, Dena and Vicki. The funeral service will be at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Wichita, Thursday (Aug. 28) at 9:30 a.m. (CDT).
