Azusa Pacific Makes History
« Back to Announcements
Azusa Pacific has again set the bar high and this time with the top awards for the 2009 fall sports. The Cougars swept the player of the year and individual champion awards in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, and men’s and women’s cross country, becoming the first school ever to sweep all 5 individual athlete fall awards.
The 2009 GSAC individual champion awards went to juniors Jacky Kipwambok and Abednego Magut in women’s and men’s cross country, respectively. The 2009 GSAC Player of the Year awards were awarded to seniors Jill Baker in volleyball, Theresa Broad in women’s soccer, and Eric Winblad in men’s soccer.
A 2-time All-American, Kipwambok won all 5 of her races this season. In the four 5K races that she has competed she averaged a time of 16:56, finishing well before her opponents. The 2-time All-American Magut followed suit by winning 4 of the 5 races he entered, including the GSAC Championship Meet in Fresno, Calif. Magut averaged a time of 24:18 over the season and finished in the top 3 places each meet.
For the second year in a row, Broad and Winblad have received the GSAC Player of the Year award for the women’s and men’s soccer programs, respectively. Broad tied for the league lead in goals with 7 and was second in points with 15. Winblad becomes the second player in Azusa Pacific history to win back-to-back GSAC Player of the Year awards. Winblad led a defense that surrendered only 10 goals on the season and recorded 8 shutouts.
Baker, an outside hitter, is first the Cougar in history to be named the GSAC Player of the year. Baker is a 2-time NAIA All-American first teamer and is a 4-time All-GSAC honoree, the second in Cougar history. Baker finished the regular season with her fourth straight 500-kill campaign.
