Cougar Footballer Gallego Passes

Fred Gallego was a halfback for Azusa Pacific from 1967-70.

AZUSA, Calif. -- Former Azusa Pacific football player Fred Gallego passed away Tuesday (Jan. 12) in his Fair Oaks, Calif., home, succumbing to a lengthy battle with cancer.  He was 63.

Gallego was a 3-year running back for the Cougars, playing on the some of the school’s early teams from 1967-70.  He rushed for 401 yards during his freshman and sophomore seasons and teamed with eventual Cougar Hall of Famer Russ Carroll to lead the Cougar offensive attack.  An injury cut short his sophomore year and then kept him out of the game his entire 1969 junior campaign.  He returned to the Cougars as a 1970 senior in a limited role off the bench.

Gallego came to Azusa Pacific after was a fine prep career at Nogales High in nearby La Puente, Calif., where he was a 2-time All-Inland League honoree.

He graduated from Azusa Pacific in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in history. 

Gallego is survived by his wife, Judy, and their 4 adult children, Toby, Kelly, Brady and Holly.  Services will be Sunday (Jan. 17).
