AZUSA, Calif. – Freshmen Rachel Miller and Rita Kim have been named the GSAC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for their play in Azusa Pacific’s 4 games during the week of April 19-24.

The 2 rookies led the Cougars to 3 victories, including one over the NAIA’s No. 8-ranked Point Loma Nazarene University to help Azusa Pacific lock down a fourth-place finish in the GSAC, assuring the Cougars of their best regular-season record in 5 years.

Miller, an outfielder from Livermore, Calif., was 6-for-8 (.750) at the plate with a home run, 5 RBIs and a run scored.  In the Cougars’ 4-0 victory over Hope International, she ripped a second-inning 2-run home run, a line shot over the left field fence that put the Cougars up 3-0 at the time.  In the second game she went 2-for-2 with run-scoring singles up the middle in the second and third innings.

The following day at Point Loma Nazarene, Miller lifted a 2-out single down the right field line to score the game’s only run in the top of the seventh and propelled the Cougars to their third straight win over the Sea Lions.  In the second game, she went 2-for-2.

Kim was masterful in her 2 games in the circle, firing 11.1 innings of shutout softball while picking up a pair of wins to run her record to 8-9 on the season and lowering her ERA to 1.94.  In the second game vs. Hope International, Kim came within 2 outs of a 5-inning perfect game and making Azusa Pacific history with back-to-back no-hitters (Taryn Devich no-hit HIU in the first game).

Kim retired the first 13 batters, including 8 by strikeout, before yielding a 1-out single to centerfield to break up her no-hit bid.  She got the next 2 batters to close out Azusa Pacific’s 8-0 victory.  The next day she shut out Point Loma Nazarene on 5 hits, striking out 2 in the process.    In the 2 games, she struck out 10 and did not walk a batter, yielding just 6 hits while holding the foe to a .158 batting average.

Miller and Kim are Azusa Pacific’s first GSAC Players of the Week for the 2010 softball season.
