AZUSA, Calif. -- For only the second time in the NAIA's 73-year history, one school has placed a team in all 6 NAIA fall sports national championship tournaments.
On Sunday the NAIA national office handed postseason tournament berths to the Cougar football and men's soccer teams thus making Azusa Pacific a "6-for-6" school with all 6 fall sports headed toward their respective NAIA national championshp tournaments/meets. Football and men's soccer joined men's and women's cross country, women's volleyball and women's soccer which had already earned berths into their NAIA tourneys.
Five of the 6 teams will open NAIA postseason competion Saturday (Nov. 20), and it all begins at 10:30 a.m. with the men's and women's cross country teams competing in the national championshp meet in Vancouver, Wash. The men's and women's soccer will host first-round games in Azusa beginning at 11 a.m., and the football team will kick off its first-round game at Carroll College in Helena, Mont., at 11 a.m. (PST).
The women's volleyball team won't begin its NAIA championship tournament play in Sioux City, Iowa, until Nov. 30.
Ironically, the only other school to place 6 teams in the NAIA fall championships was Azusa Pacific in 2005.
