AZUSA, Calif. – The NAIA’s No. 24-ranked Azusa Pacific swept the Golden State Athletic Conference softball weekly individual honors today. Sophomores Brandi Andrews and Taryn Devich were selected the GSAC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, after leading the Cougars to a pair of victories, including arguably the program’s biggest win the past 3 years.
Andrews, a right fielder out of Glendora (Calif.) High, had just 7 at-bats in 11 plate appearances last week and only 2 hits, but each was a game-winner. She slugged a 3-run home run in the fourth inning to put the Cougars ahead in what was an eventual 5-1 victory at Biola. Then with 2 outs in the bottom of the fourth inning against Cal Baptist, she ripped a triple to the right field wall to score the go-ahead run in the Cougars’ 2-1 upset of the top-ranked Lancers. Andrews’ 3-bagger was the Cougars’ only hit over their final 5 innings of play, but it was the shot that ended Cal Baptist’s 31-game winning streak and handed them their first GSAC loss of the season.
Devich was 2-1 on the week, working 15.1 innings in the circle while striking 17 in the process. She opened the week with a complete-game victory at Biola, surrendering an unearned run on 5 hits while striking out 6 and walking 2.
Three days later Devich started the first game of the doubleheader against No. 1-ranked Cal Baptist. She couldn’t get through 4 innings, yielding 5 runs on 5 hits, including a pair of home runs. However, she came back in the night cap as a different pitcher, throwing 3.2 innings of no-hit relief, striking out 5 and walking 1 to pick up the victory as the Cougars rallied for the 2-1 win over CBU.
