AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific remained in the lead in the NAIA Directors' Cup standings in the first standings release of the spring, which includes all spring sports championships except baseball. Azusa Pacific scored a total of 329.25 points, the third highest spring total in the latest set of NAIA standings, bringing the Cougars' 2010-11 season point total to 1020.75.
A national semifinals appearance for the Cougar women’s tennis team netted 80 points, and a fifth-place women's track and field performance at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships brought in another 75 points. Men's tennis advanced to the NAIA Tournament quarterfinals, a 70-point contribution, which was followed by the 62.25 points added by the men’s track and field team for a 13th-place effort. Azusa Pacific's softball team made its first NAIA Tournament appearance since 2001, resulting in another 39 points for the Cougars.
With an NAIA-leading spring total of 427 points, Shorter (Ga.) moved into second place in the overall standings with 741 points. Joining Azusa Pacific in the top-10 are fellow Golden State Athletic Conference programs from Fresno Pacific (fifth, 669.75) and California Baptist (eighth, 601.00). Concordia and Biola also rank among the top-15 in the latest standings.
Standings published midseason are unofficial. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the spring season. The final NAIA standings will be released Friday, June 17 in conjunction with the NACDA Convention
and Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Luncheon presented by the USOC.
