AZUSA, Calif.-- Entering its second season of Pacific West Conference play, the Azusa Pacific baseball was picked third in the PacWest coaches poll, the conference office announced Thursday.
The Cougars received one first place vote, and with 61 points finished behind Dixie State (79) and the reigning conference champions of California Baptist (81). CBU received four first place votes, with Dixie State earning three first place votes. Hawai’i Pacific, Fresno Pacific, and Point Loma all tied for third in the preseason poll, with HPU also receiving one first place vote.
Senior outfielder Matt Kimmel was named to the preseason All-PacWest team. Kimmel, who was a First-Team NAIA All-American in 2012, and an All-PacWest honoree in 2013, was the Cougars’ lone representative. The Redmond, Wash. native broke the program-record for singles in 2012 with 72, and through three years at Azusa Pacific has 95 career RBIs. As a junior he paced the Cougars in hits, runs, RBIs, and on-base percentage.
California Baptist led all programs with four players on the preseason All-PacWest team, while Point Loma and Fresno Pacific each had two representatives. Hawai’i Pacific, Academy of Art, and Dixie State each had one player named to the preseason all-conference team.
Azusa Pacific opens up the 2014 season at home against Cal State San Bernardino on Feb. 1, and begins PacWest competition against Academy of Art on Feb. 28.
