LEWISTON, Ida. -- Not in their house -- at least for now.
The NAIA's No. 2-ranked and defending national champion Lewis-Clark State scored 5 unanswered runs to rally from a 3-1 deficit and defeated Azusa Pacific, 6-3, to avenge Tuesday's 11-5 spanking at the hands of the Cougars.
Tyler Best's 2-run home run to right field, his first round-tripper of the season, knotted the game at 3-3 with 2 outs in the fifth inning. The Warriors then strung together 3 hits in the sixth inning to produce a trio of runs to assume the lead for the first time in its series with Azusa Pacific. The Warriors refused to let Azusa Pacific back into the game. Nick Browne's 2-run double down the rightfield line capped the evening's scoring and gave L-C State a 3-run cushion that it maintained over the final 3 innings.
Azusa Pacific appeared to be headed toward another upset of Lewis-Clark State when the Cougars took a 3-1 lead after a 3-run fourth innning. The Cougars used 5 singles and took advanged of a Warrior error to tally the trio of runs.
Cougar starter Andy Alstott was in control of the Warriors early on, limiting them to just 3 hits while striking out 7. However, L-C State began to get to him in the fifth inning before he finally succumbed with 2 outs in the sxith.
Along with Alstot, Cougar relievers Joe Bitonti and Josh Breckley limited the damage of the Warriors' power bats. It the bottom third of L-C State's line-up that gave the Cougars' fits, producing all 6 RBIs amongst the 3 of them.
With the loss, Azusa Pacific falls to 23-18 while Lewis-Clark State improves to 28-8.
Azusa Pacific finishes its stay in Idaho on Friday with a pair of games, first taking on Central Washington at 3 p.m. before playing the rubber game of the Lewis-Clark State series at 6 p.m.
