AZUSA, Calif.-- The 2005 Azusa Pacific baseball recruiting class has been completed as head coach Paul Svagdis has announced the signing of a pair of pitchers—Garrett Lebsock and Barrett Kanyer.

Lebsock, a 6’ 3” righthander from Fort Collins, Colo., is coming off a senior season in which he posted a 5-1 mark and was ninth in the state with 1.50 ERA. In 32.2 innings, Lebsock allowed 25 hits and just 7 earned runs. He struck out 40 while allowing a measly 5 walks.

In his final 6 appearances of the season, Lebsock tossed 21.2 innings without allowing a single earned run and striking out 25. His best outing of the season came in a 4-3 win over Thornton when he allowed just 2 hits in 6 innings while recording 7 strikeouts. For his efforts this season, Lebsock was named All-Front Range League first team, and he recently received Colorado 5A honorable mention. He was also named as a participant for the 2005 Colorado Rockies Senior Top 40 game last Sunday.

“Garret is quite a competitor that has just begun to tap into his ability on the mound,” said Svagdis. “He has excellent potential. That combined with his ability to throw consistent strikes and his desire to compete every time he takes the hill gives him the ability to compete for substantial innings next spring. We are very excited and optimistic about Garrett’s future with the program.”

Kanyer just completed a dream season at prep-power O’Dea High School in Seattle, Wash., leading the Fighting Irish to Class 3A state title last week. He finished the season with a 7-3 mark as the staff ace, recording a season-high 12 strikeouts earlier this season.

In O’Dea’s state semifinal win over Mark Morris High School, Kanyer tossed a complete-game, 6-hitter. He didn’t allow an earned run while striking out 6. The next day, O’Dea, who won 5 straight loser-out games to get to the championship game, wrapped the state title with an 8-5 win over top-seed Columbia River High School.

“We are very optimistic about Barret’s future as a pitcher in our program,” said Svagdis. “He has competed at a very competitive and high level in Seattle. He has a very competitive nature when he takes the mound. He has also been noted for his leadership in terms of work ethic on and off the field. Barret has proven to be a very dedicated student and athlete, both of which are qualities that our coaching staff feels are essential to being an Azusa Pacific baseball player”
