THIS YEAR: An extremely bright player, senior Matt Oliver is the most experienced Cougar on the 17-man roster ... Can play a variety of positions from down low near the basket, to the perimeter as a point guard and to the wing, his natural position ... Will be a key figure in the Cougar scheme ... Good ball-handler and quite adept at getting to the basket … Can shoot the three with accuracy ... Fearless in his style of play … Popular with his teammates because of his work-ethic.
2007 (junior): Made the switch to point guard for the first time in his college career and appeared in all 36 Cougar games, all off the bench ... Averaged 4.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists ... Converted his 3-point attempts at a .447 (21-for-47) clip, tops on the team ... Came off the bench to score a career-high 22 points in just 23 minutes in the Cougars’ 94-85 victory over eventual NAIA runner-up Concordia, nailing the go-ahead trey with 67 seconds left in the game ... Also had a team-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting vs. California Baptist at home ... Twice registered a career-high 8 rebounds (vs. Vanguard and Hope International) ... Recorded a career-high 11 assists in a blow victory over Life Pacific.
2006 (sophomore: Made great strides during his 2006 sophomore season, appearing in 24 of the Cougars’ 36 games, all off the bench ... Averaged 2.5 points and 1.8 rebounds in nearly 9 minutes of action per outing ... Enjoyed a strong start to the season, averaging over 6 points a game at one point ... Scored a season-high 11 points in 17 minutes of play in a victory over Occidental ... Also had 10 points and a career-high 8 rebounds against Puget Sound Christian
2005 (freshman): Made the Cougar team during fall tryouts and translated his opportunity into 23 appearances off the bench as a true freshman … Scored 47 points in 23 games, averaging 6 minutes of play … Saw quite a bit of play early in the season, averaging over 11 minutes in his first 8 games … Best showing came against St. Mary (Kan.) with 10 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals in 23 minutes of play.
HIGH SCHOOL: Was a 2-year standout at Crescenta Valley High in La Crescenta, Calif., playing for head coach Tim Smiley … Was a 2-time All-Pacific League first team selection, earning league MVP honors as a 2004 senior after averaging 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists a game … Had 15 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists in a win over Glendale High … Led the Falcons to a 2-year record of 41-14.
