AZUSA, Calif. -- For only the second time in conference history and first since 2001, the Golden State Athletic Conference coaches have picked the same school to win both the men’s and women’s basketball conference championships for the coming season.
Azusa Pacific has been tabbed by the GSAC coaches to take the men’s and women’s basketball crowns for 2010-11. For the men, the coaches’ nod came with the narrowest margins while the Cougar women are overwhelming favorites to collect their second straight GSAC title.
The Azusa Pacific men edged defending conference champion Concordia University by 1 point. The Cougars received 6 first-place votes, while Concordia collected the remaining 5, and it was that one additional tally at the top that proved to be the difference. Meanwhile, the women, who shared last year’s conference title with Vanguard University, garnered 10 of the 11 available first-place votes with Vanguard getting the other one.
Last spring Azusa Pacific became the second school in NAIA history to have both its men’s and women’s teams advanced to their respective Division I national championship game in the same season. Though both teams came up short (the men had a potential game-winning basket waved at the final horn) in those title games, they each return the nucleus of their squads. In fact, the Cougar women return all 5 starters from last year’s 29-7 team while men welcome back 4 starters and 10 players in all from last year’s 28-10 squad.
This marks just the second time that the GSAC coaches have tabbed the Cougar women as the conference favorite, and for the 14th time in the past 19 years the Azusa Pacific men have been picked to win the GSAC.
