AZUSA, Calif. -- For the second straight night senior Caleb Burgess came off the bench to lead the team in scoring and 5 different Cougars scored in double figures as Azusa Pacific rolled La Sierra University, 106-63, Saturday night.
Azusa Pacific scored the first 12 points of the game and was never threatened throughout the night. Five different Cougars scored in the game-opening run, including Burgess, who drained a trey less than 20 seconds into the contest. It was an indicator of what was to come for the remaining 15 minutes of action that Burgess played. He made 8-of-10 shots from the floor, including 4 from the arc.
Senior forward Danny Nugent had his best game in his brief Cougar career, scoring 14 points while going 4-for-4 from the 3-point line.
Senior center Reggie Owens added 16 points with a 7-for-8 shooting clip.
Azusa Pacific led 61-33 at halftime and cruised throughout the second half with Head Coach Justin Leslie employing all 14 Cougars at his disposal. James Staniland and Dallas Rutherford each added a season-high 10 points off the bench.
Azusa Pacific shot at a fine .554 (41-for-74) clip and committed just 10 turnovers.
The victory is Azusa Pacific’s fourth in as many meetings with La Sierra, all of which were decided by 40-or-more points.
La Sierra, which falls to 0-4 with the loss, was paced by Miles Robbins, the only Golden Eagle in double figures in scoring, finishing with 11 points.
With the victory the Cougars take a 2-1 record into next weekend’s Occidental Thanksgiving Tournament which Azusa Pacific will open with a game against Chapman University on Friday (Nov. 26) at 5 p.m. The Cougars will take on tournament host Occidental on Saturday (Nov. 27) at 7 p.m.
