AZUSA, Calif. -- On Thursday, October 20, the Azusa Pacific women’s and men’s basketball teams tip off the 2011-12 season with the annual Midnight Madness event which is free to attend and open to the public. Students are invited to help celebrate the beginning of the season as Cougar Athletics gives students a chance to win a new car, flat screen television, free textbooks for a semester and many other prize giveaways. Music and free food from Chick-Fil-A, Dalia’s Pizza and Golden Spoon will be provided, as well.
The event starts with free food and live music at 9 p.m. on Azusa Pacific’s West Campus. At 9:45 p.m. the doors to the Felix Event Center will open, the food and music will come to an end, and the basketball festivities and giveaways will begin. An entertainment-filled night features the Azusa Pacific acrobatics and tumbling squad, along with both basketball teams displaying their talents in a three-point shooting contest and dunk contest.
The Cougar women’s basketball team won the program’s first-ever NAIA championship last season, setting the program’s single-season wins record with a 33-5 campaign. The Cougars will defend their championship season under NAIA Coach of the Year T.J. Hardeman with 10 returners and six new recruits.
The Cougar men’s basketball team has appeared in 16 consecutive NAIA national tournaments, advancing to at least the quarterfinals in five of the past seven seasons. The team features four returning players and 12 newcomers.
In addition, Blackout bracelets will be available for purchase for $5, which includes the bracelet, coupons for free food from Chick-Fil-A, Golden Spoon, Chipotle, and entry into Blackout contests throughout the year. Three people will be selected for a half-court shot for use of free books for the spring semester, and a big screen TV will be given away. In addition, one person will be selected to shoot for a Chrysler 300.
