5:30 P.M. WOMEN’S GAME: AZUSA PACIFIC VS. CONCORDIA
The NAIA’s No. 13-ranked Azusa Pacific welcomes a Concordia squad that hasn’t posted a win in the Felix Event Center since a 67-52 rout of the Cougars in 2003. Azusa Pacific is 35-19 all-time against the Eagles, holding a 21-6 edge at home in the series history. The Cougars are currently 6-0 at home this season and have won 14 consecutive regular-season home games dating back to early last season.
In Azusa Pacific’s 99-89 road win at Fresno Pacific earlier this week, the Cougars (10-5, 3-2 GSAC) notched their first GSAC win of the season away from the Felix Event Center. Amber Williams was dominant in the game, posting a career high 32 points while pulling down 10 rebounds. The center has tallied nine double-doubles on the season and is the only player in the NAIA to rank in the national top-10 in scoring (19.6) and rebounding average (13.1). Playing equally well is Briana Hall, who after a one-game absence returned to the lineup with one of her best games as a Cougar. The program’s all-time assists leader scored a career-high 29 points, 22 in the second half, and dished out eight assists while shooting a perfect 12-of-12 from the line in Tuesday’s win over the Sunbirds.
7:30 P.M. MEN’S GAME: AZUSA PACIFIC VS. CONCORDIA
The NAIA’s No. 7-ranked Azusa Pacific (13-3, 3-2 GSAC) will be wearing throwback uniforms featuring the old school colors of orange and black in the first of two “throwback” games this season honoring Cougar Basketball alumni this season. The uniforms will also be worn on Feb. 25 in the regular-season finale against Westmont. Members of the 1993 team, which won the program’s first of 13 GSAC men’s basketball titles and started an unprecedented run of nine straight conference crowns, along with NAIA Hall of Fame coach Bill Odell, will be recognized with other Cougar Basketball alumni during halftime of Saturday’s game.
Azusa Pacific leads the all-time series with Concordia, 38-20, but the Eagles have won seven of the past 11, including both regular-season meetings plus last year’s GSAC Tournament title game. The teams have split 22 meetings since the 2003-04 season, developing into one of the GSAC’s fiercest men’s basketball rivalries. In fact, Azusa Pacific and Concordia have squared off in the GSAC Tournament championship game six times in the past nine years, also splitting those six meetings.
Azusa Pacific, which played 11 of its first 14 games this season at home, return to the Felix Event Center following a split of back-to-back road games at Vanguard and Fresno Pacific. The Cougars have seven players averaging eight points a game or better, although Concordia has six players averaging 10 or more. Saturday’s contest pits Concordia’s GSAC-leading scoring offense against an Azusa Pacific defense that leads the league in scoring defense in GSAC play.
