AZUSA, Calif. -- Senior guard Brandon Dunson added an NAIA All-American honorable mention to the All-GSAC honor he received after he helped lead Azusa Pacific to a 24-8 campaign and second-place finish in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Dunson finished third on the team in scoring, averaging 9.8 points per game along with 3.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists. After the Cougars lost senior guard Marshall Johnson during the first half of an 85-66 win in mid-January over eventual NAIA champion Concordia, Dunson scored a team-high 18 points to help lead Azusa Pacific to the win over the eventual GSAC regular-season champions. He later averaged 12.4 points and a team-high 1.4 steals in Johnson's absence over the final 14 games of the regular season.
Dunson, an athletic and explosive guard who dazzled home crowds with numerous highlight-reel dunks throughout the season, ranked in the GSAC’s top 15 players in assists, blocks, free throw percentage, and assist-to-turnover ratio, and his 11.0 scoring average during GSAC play ranked 22nd in the conference. He twice scored a season-high 20 points in wins over Cal State San Marcos and Westmont.
Azusa Pacific has concluded its membership in the NAIA and the GSAC, and the Cougars will compete in the NCAA Division II's Pacific West Conference next season. In the 2012-13 school year, Azusa Pacific University will be in the second year of a three-year membership process into NCAA Division II.
