Blog: The Meats of Victory

Throughout this week, Azusa Pacific senior guard Kasey Myers has been recording his viewpoints as a player in the NAIA Championship in Kansas City. Regarded as the most difficult championship to win in all of college sports, the NAIA Tournament requires the eventual champ to win 5 games in 6 days. Myers is two-fifths of the way there.

“Another Rematch at Hand”
Kasey Myers

Here I sit in the stands of Municipal Auditorium. Another day of all-day basketball, wall-to-wall. From 9 a.m. until sometime after midnight. And after another 8-game day of elimination basketball, the NAIA Tournament has gone from 32 teams to 8, and the Cougars still stand. Though our fans would like us to make it easy on them and win by 20, it’s just not that easy at the national tournament.

A win is a win, though, and we celebrated accordingly by eating at Jack Stack Steakhouse. With a table count of 35, the players, the families, and the coaches all enjoyed some of the finest meats Kansas City has to offer. The system back here at nationals is simple. Win and you get to keep eating like kings.

I have already expressed my joy in the rematch of last year’s national title game against John Brown, so I guess it’s only fitting that I should be thrilled as well with a rematch of last year’s semi-final game with Robert Morris. I’m sure they’re a little bitter from last year, so they should have some fire in them, but when you’re Azusa Pacific you’re used to teams who want payback. It should be a great game, and I don’t see why anything needs to change from last year.

It is such an accomplishment to keep playing back here in Municipal, and I hope we can keep it up. As a senior I can think of no better way to go out then by winning the national championship, by playing one game at a time.
