AZUSA, Calif.-- In its first exhibition of the 2013-14 season the Azusa Pacific women’s basketball team posted a 90-70 win over Biola on Tuesday night. The Cougars, who return only two starters from the 2012-13 campaign, led by just five at the half before pulling away over the final 20 minutes.

Sophomore forward Kelly Hardeman didn’t miss a beat in her return from her all-conference rookie season, scoring 21 points to go with eight rebounds. Long Beach State transfer Sendy Valles poured in a game-high 27 points and had a game-high six steals in her Cougar debut, while Portland State transfer Allison Greene recorded nine points.

Azusa Pacific led by as many as 22 in the second half, and out rebounded the Eagles (0-3) 36-28. Sophomore center Lauren Gilster had a strong night, registering nine points, while Sullivan Ziegler, last season’s PacWest assist leader, dished out 11 assists in the win.

Freshman forward Maggie Dumphy impressed in her first collegiate game, scoring 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

Azusa Pacific will play an exhibition against Westmont on Nov. 13 before it opens the regular season on Saturday Nov. 16 against Cal Poly Pomona in the Felix Event Center for a 3 p.m. tip.
