AZUSA, Calif. --- Sophomore Kelsey Hudson had a game-high 18 points to lead 3 Cougars in double-figures as Azusa Pacific picked up its first win of the season with a 78-47 victory over Hope International Saturday night in Azusa.
Hudson, who scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half, finished the game 6-for-12 from the floor and also grabbed 8 rebounds as the Cougars led the game for all but 6 minutes.
The Royals came out firing on all cylinders and keyed by a pair of Jennifer Dyche treys took a 10-7 lead at the 14:41 mark. The Cougars answered by scoring the next 11 points, 6 of them from Hudson, in the next 3:57 to take an 8-point lead (18-10) with 11:44 to play.
Hope International climbed within 2 (19-17) with 7:45 to play, but the Cougars outscored the Royals 22-8 to close out the half. In all, the Cougars outscored Hope International 34-15 in the final 15 minutes to take a 41-25 lead into the locker room.
The Cougars controlled the final 20 minutes, as the Royals got no closer than 11 points. Leading 53-42 at the 10:32 mark of the second half, the Cougars once again exploded to outscore the Royals 25-5 in the final 10 minutes of the game to put the game away. The 31-point advantage at the end was the Cougars’ largest lead of the game.
Junior Candis Regan finished with 15 points and 6 rebounds. She hit a pair of 3-pointers. Freshman Lindsey West chipped in with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 1-7 overall, 1-1 GSAC. Hope International falls to 5-4, 0-2. The Cougars next host NCAA Division III-power Chapman Dec. 18 in a non-conference game at 5 p.m.
