SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The NAIA’s No. 23-ranked Point Loma Nazarene took advantage of its quickness and height to hand Azusa Pacific its fourth straight loss and its sixth in the past 7 games, downing the Cougars, 69-59, in Golden Gymnasium Saturday evening.
Led by Zaneta Drungilaite’s 18 points and 13 rebounds, the Crusaders literally raced out to a 35-23 halftime lead, outscoring Azusa Pacific, 12-2, on fast-break points. When the pace of the game slowed in the second half, PLNU went to work on the glass, keeping Azusa Pacific at bay by scoring 19 second-chance points (Azusa Pacific managed just 4). For the game, Point Loma out-rebounded Azusa Pacific, 44-32, which included a 17-4 edge on offensive caroms.
Azusa Pacific trailed by as much as 15 midway through the first half but was able to whittle the lead down to 4 at 46-42 following a Nicolette Dresbeck bucket with 9 minutes left in the game. However, Point Loma responded with a 15-7 run that put the Cougars back in a 12-point hole with just 2:30 left to play.
Kelsey Hudson led Azusa Pacific with 18 points (12 in the first half) and 8 rebounds. Junior Marie Dyke added 12 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.
With the loss Azusa Pacific falls to 6-16 overall, 4-7 in the GSAC. Point Loma Nazarene improves to 16-5 overall, 9-2 in the GSAC.
