Azusa Pacific 56
Christian Heritage 50
AZUSA, Calif. –This one’s been 3 weeks in the making, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Azusa Pacific used an 11-2 run over the final minutes of the game to sneak away with a 56-50 win over visiting Christian Heritage, snapping the Cougars’ 5-game losing streak.
The Cougars last won January 14, beating Biola, 62-55, in Azusa, but this win softens the sting and at the same time keeps the Cougars’ a 1-game lead over Concordia for the eighth and final playoff spot.
Lindsey West hit the back-end of a pair of free throws to tie the game at 46-46 with 4:29 left and in the process spurned an 11-2 Azusa Pacific run where the Cougars opened up a 56-48 lead with just 17 seconds left. The Cougars hit 4-of-6 free throws in the final minute.
Christian Heritage actually led 39-33 with 11:19 to play when the Cougars went on a 12-0 run over the next 3:08 to take a 45-39 lead. Five different Cougars scored in the spurt, capped by back-to-back buckets by West.
The Hawks, however, answered with 7 straight points to re-take the lead, 46-45, with 4:29 to play. That’s when the Cougars began their game-clinching run with a West free throw and then held the Hawks to just 4 free throws in the final 4:48.
West led 4 Cougars in double-figures with 16 points, and she grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Candis Regan added 13 points off the bench. Nicolette Dresback chipped in with 11 points and 4 rebounds, and Marie Dyk added 10 points in 26 minutes off the bench for her third straight game with double-figures off the bench.
