AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific’s Noah Peña was awarded the Pacific West Conference Men’s Cross Country Freshman Runner of the Week after a season-best performance at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota on Sept. 28.
After finishing sixth among Azusa Pacific finishers in the first two races of the year, Peña shaved 30 seconds off his previous season-best at UC Riverside. Even more impressive was that he did so while all his teammates were at least a minute slower than at UC Riverside. As a result, Peña was the Cougars’ No. 3 finisher at the Roy Griak, posting an average pace of 5:22 to finish the 8K in a time of 27:09.03, 88th overall among meet participants from four-year schools.
Peña’s was the third PacWest men’s cross country weekly award claimed by a Cougar athlete, as he joined fellow freshman Kyle Bueckert as a freshman runner of the week honoree along with Peter Buscheck, who earned PacWest Runner of the Week honors following the Cougars’ season-opening performance at the California Baptist Invitational.
The PacWest Freshman Runner of the Week is one of two weekly honors given by the conference, going to either a freshman or redshirt freshman based on their overall performance for the previous week of competition.
The PacWest Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week was Academy of Art junior Nicolas Rifflard.
