THIS YEAR: Sophomore Matt Davis is looking to crack the starting line-up at wide receiver after seeing a lot time as a reserve last year ... Consistency of play will be a key for him ... Rated a good athlete who is sharpening his skills at receiver after playing running back and defensive back in high school.
2008 (freshman): Returned to football after a 1-year layoff and worked off the rust over the first half of the season before moving onto the 2-deep over the final 5 games of the season ... Appeared in 8 games, starting 3 of the final 4 ... Had 8 grabs for 97 yards (12.1 avg.) ... His longest reception was a 23-yarder vs. Humboldt State when he also tallied a season-high 3 catches for 43 yards ... Also filled roles on special teams, in particular the kickoff unit.
HIGH SCHOOL: Competed in 4 different sports at Jim Elliot Christian High School in Lodi, Calif., from where he graduated in 2007 ... Played on Jim Elliot's first-ever football team ... As a senior, named All-Harvest Christian League and league MVP after rushing for 1,173 yards on 121 carries (9.7 avg.) while scoring a team-leading 25 TDs ... Also had 14 receptions for a team high 383 yards (27.4 avg.) ... Averaged per game 117.3 yard total offense and 215.4 all-purpose yards while leading the Eagles to a 7-4 record ... Best game came in a 41-14 victory over North Hills Christian when he rushed for a career-high 202 yards on 10 carries and had 3 receptions for 53 yards ... Also rushed for 191 yards on 7 carries in a 54-12 win over Big Valley Christian High ... As a 2005 junior, appeared in 4 games before a broken collar bone ended his season ... Still, rushed for 281 yards on 45 carries (6.2 avg.) while scoring 4 TDs for the 6-3 Eagles ... As a 2004 sophomore was named team MVP for the 8-2 Eagles after rushing for 946 yards on 101 carries (9.4 avg.) and scoring a team-high 14 TDs ... Was also a 2-year standout in basketball and as a senior earned all-league and team MVP recognition after averaging 15.3 points and 12.1 rebounds while leading Jim Elliot Christian High to a 13-11 record in 2007 ... Also lettered 4 years in golf and one year in track & field ... Served as senior class president.
PERSONAL: Born Sept. 22, 1989, in Lodi, Calif. ... Parents are Dean (manager) and Jane (high school athletics director) Davis ... Has a brother (Jon, former All-American wide receiver for the Cougars) and a sister (Katie) ... Majoring in business with a minor in math ... Attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for one year before transferring to Azusa Pacific.
