AZUSA, Calif. -- Following a second consecutive victory which knocked the Great Northwest Athletic Conference frontrunner out of the lead position, Azusa Pacific had two players earn GNAC Football Player of the Week honors for their performances in a 19-3 road win over Western Oregon last week. Freshman kicker Jamie Cacciatore was named special teams player of the week, while junior linebacker Sean Barber earned co-defensive player of the week honors.
Cacciatore accounted for all of the Cougars’ scoring against Western Oregon until the offense punched in a touchdown with 11 seconds left in the contest. Cacciatore nailed four field goals (from 25, 18, 33 and 25 yards), tying the GNAC single-game record.
Barber led the Cougars in tackles, with 11, as they held the Wolves’ offense to just three points in the game. Barber had six solo tackles and one tackle for loss. In the second quarter, Barber intercepted Ryan Bergman on the Western Oregon 30-yard line, setting up Cacciatore for his third field goal of the game which gave the Cougars a 9-3 halftime lead.
Barber becomes the second Azusa Pacific recipient of GNAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, following the selection of Nick Grunsky last week, and Cacciatore is the Cougars’ first player to pick up the conference’s special teams player of the week award.
Azusa Pacific continues GNAC play with a visit to Dixie State College in St. George, Utah, on Saturday, November 3, before returning home to wrap up the season Nov. 10 against Simon Fraser.
