AZUSA, Calif. -- First-year Great Northwest Athletic Conference affiliate member Azusa Pacific University claimed the 2012-13 GNAC academic team title in football, posting the highest team grade point average among the conference’s six football programs.
“While our entire program tirelessly strives to achieve success on the field, this academic championship speaks volumes about the standard our student-athletes are challenged to rise up and meet in the classroom,” head coach Victor Santa Cruz said. “What's more, it's noteworthy to also credit the servant-minded culture of our university's faculty. Their enthusiasm and relational attitude towards education helps to draw out the academic potential of their students.”
Azusa Pacific’s 2012-13 team GPA was 2.88, and four-time GNAC football academic team champion Central Washington finished in second place with a combined 2.71 GPA. Dixie State was third with a 2.64 team GPA.
The GNAC academic team title followed the announcement of 153 student-athletes from other Azusa Pacific sports who were named to the 2012-13 Pacific West Conference Academic All-Conference Team.
“Playing college football at Azusa Pacific is a rare privilege, but our student-athletes are here first and foremost to get a degree and become a difference maker,” Santa Cruz said.
Last fall, Azusa Pacific led all GNAC football programs by producing 13 of the league’s 38 selections to the GNAC Academic All-Conference team. No other school had more than seven representatives for that award.
