“We certainly understand the situation La Verne is dealing with this week and are in agreement with their decision to not play the game,” said Azusa Pacific director of athletics Bill Odell. “Our prayers continue to be for the Dykstra family and the extended community at the University of La Verne.”
Saturday’s game was to be the 38th meeting between the neighboring institutions, which are just 11 miles from each other along the foothill corridor of the San Gabriel Mountains.
"We want to express our gratitude to everyone at Azusa Pacific University for understanding the emotions we are going through at the present time,” said University of La Verne Athletics Director Jim Paschal. “The administrators at Azusa Pacific have been very supportive of our situation. Unfortunately, our players and coaching staff are not yet ready to participate in a competitive event at this time." The game will not be rescheduled for later this season.
