AZUSA, Calif.-- On Friday afternoon the No. 10 ranked Azusa Pacific men’s tennis team showed how far it’s come since the beginning of the season. The reigning NCCAA national champions narrowly edged out Point Loma in the second match this year, defeating the Sea Lions 5-4 on Feb. 7. But Friday the Cougars had little trouble recording their 14th win, sweeping through doubles action en route to a 9-0 victory against Point Loma.

In doubles play the team of Gary Yam and Jan Meyer trailed 7-6 at No., but got a hold and a break before Yam served for the 9-7 victory over the 13th ranked duo of Brooks Baldinger and Michael Zablan. Frederik Wilkens and Tomas Aranguiz registered an 8-3 win at No. 2, while Pascal Engel and Alan Leahy posted an 8-4 defeat of Daniel Milliken and Kevin McKelligan at No. 3.

No. 5 ranked Meyer continued his strong play, kicking off singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Baldinger, before No. 7 Wilkens clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Martin Blaho at No. 2. Engel beat Zablan in straight sets (6-2, 6-2), and Leahy registered a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kaptan Kaster at No. 4.

Yam won a first set tie breaker 7-1 in his 7-6, 6-2 defeat of Milliken, and Aranguiz tabbed a 6-0, 6-1 win against Kevin McKelligan at No. 5.

Azusa Pacific will continue play Saturday against NCAA Division I UC Riverside Saturday, before hosting Biola and UC San Diego next week.
