SANTA BARBARA, Calif.-- The Azusa Pacific women’s water polo team recorded its first win of the year on Saturday, defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 11-5 after falling to No. 20 Pacific 10-1 at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational, wrapping up the opening weekend of the 2014 season with a 1-3 mark.

The Cougars (1-3), who had a rough second half in the loss to Pacific, outscored the Otters 7-3 in the final two quarters, while Maryann Slama registered her second hat trick of the year with a match-high four goals in the victory over CSUMB.

Three Azusa Pacific players posted multi-goal performances, with Allison Gonzales and Alynn Reade scoring twice against Cal State Monterey Bay after the Cougars combined for just one score in the loss to Pacific.

After playing to a 1-1 tie in the first quarter, Azusa Pacific outscored CSUMB 3-1 in the second to go into the break with a 4-2 lead. The Cougars then extended their lead to five goals after a 4-1 edge in the third, before outscoring Cal State Monterey Bay 3-2 in the final frame to close the opening weekend on a positive note after suffering three consecutive losses to ranked opponents to kick off the season.

Jessica Armagost finished with eight saves on the day, tallying four in each match. Taylor Whitney, Lora Donaldson, Megan Minekime, and Megan Myers each found the back of the net on Saturday.

In the loss to the Tigers, Azusa Pacific limited Pacific to just two first half goals to trail 2-1 at the break. The Tigers, however, scored four goals in the third and fourth quarter, to come away with a 10-1 victory. Whitney was the Cougars’ lone goal scorer, while Armagost tabbed four saves in the match.

Azusa Pacific will return to action with a triple header at the Whittier Invitational on Feb. 8, where it will face a trio of SCIAC programs in Redlands, La Verne, and Whittier.
