AZUSA, Calif. -- The first 6 of 7 non-conference opponents on Azusa Pacific’s 2009 men’s soccer schedule participated in postseason play, and the defending Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season champion Cougars open the campaign at home against perennial NAIA power Simon Fraser (B.C.) in the Cougar Classic.

The 2009 version of the Cougar Classic involves both Azusa Pacific’s men’s and women’s soccer programs, with the Cougar Soccer Complex hosting 8 intercollegiate contests over a 3-day period. First-year head coach Dave Blomquist follows the Aug. 27 opener with final game of the tournament, a 5 p.m. matchup with Westminster (Utah) College on Saturday, Aug. 29.

Azusa Pacific is on the road for the next 4 contests, taking on NCAA Division III foes Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer Sept. 3 and 5 before testing itself against a pair of 2008 NAIA Tournament participants at the Sept. 11-12 University of Mobile (Ala.) Kick-Off Classic. The Cougars open the tournament against Notre Dame College of Ohio on Friday, Sept. 11, then clash with tournament host University of Mobile (Ala.), a quarterfinalist at last year’s NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship.

Blomquist gets to run his squad through a final non-conference tuneup before the 10-game GSAC slate, hosting Cal State San Marcos on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Azusa Pacific opens conference play with a Saturday, Sept. 26 visit to Vanguard University for a rematch of last year’s regular-season finale between that teams that decided the conference’s regular-season champion.

Azusa Pacific gets GSAC foes Hope International, Concordia, California Baptist, Westmont and San Diego Christian at home in 2009, the last 3 consecutively from Oct. 17 through 24 before wrapping up the regular season with an Oct. 28 visit to Fresno Pacific, which hosts the final site of the 2009 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship. The NAIA Tournament Opening Round games will be hosted at campus sites throughout the nation on Saturday, Nov. 21.
