AZUSA, Calif.-- The Cougar men’s soccer team had four players earn All-Pacific West honors, the conference office announced Thursday. Junior midfielder Oktay Bulut headlined the list after being named the PacWest Newcomer of the Year. Senior midfielder Michael Sahagian and junior defender Garrett Mehrguth received third-team recognition, while junior forward Jeremy Bishop earned honorable mention status.

OKTAY BULUT: Newcomer of the Year; First-Team Midfielder

The junior from Ruesselsheim, Germany paced the Cougars in goals (11) and assists (7), finishing sixth in the PacWest in points (29). Bulut had four multi-goal games, three times combining for five points. After starting the season with only one goal and one assist through the first five matches Bulut exploded for five goals and three assists in a three game-span that included defeats of Dominican, California Baptist, and Point Loma. Bulut finished the season with four game-winners, and converted two of three penalty kicks.

MICHAEL SAHAGIAN: Third-Team, Midfielder

Sahagian saved his best season for last, scoring a career-high three goals, while adding a career-best six assists. The Senior from Lake Forest was the cog to an Azusa Pacific attack that racked up 48 goals, and 10 times tallied three or more goals in a match. He had a season-high two assists in the Cougars’ 5-2 win over Hope International, and scored the first goal in the team’s 2-1 win over Biola on Sept. 1.

GARRETT MEHRGUTH: Third-Team, Defender

Mehrguth helped Azusa Pacific out-score opponents 48-30 this season, while anchoring a Cougar defense that posted three shutouts. He added one assist, and started in 17 of 18 matches for a team that went 10-4 in its first season in the PacWest.

JEREMY BISHOP: Honorable Mention, Forward

As one of the conference’s most fun players to watch Bishop registered three goals and five assists. The junior from Glendora had a season-high two assists against Chaminade (Hawai’i), and recorded scores against Hope International, Notre Dame de Namur, and Point Loma. The Cougars went undefeated (3-0-1) in matches where Bishop tallied an assist.
