AZUSA, Calif.-- After a 12-6-1 season that ended in the West Regionals of the National Christian College Athletics Association tournament the Azusa Pacific men’s soccer team had a pair of players honored as All-Americans. The Cougars, who went 10-4 in their first season in the Pacific West Conference, also had two players named as NCCAA Scholar-Athletes.
Michael Sahagina led the charge, receiving second-team All-America recognition, while Oktay Bulut was listed as a third-teamer.
The senior midfielder had a career-year for the Cougars, registering career-highs in goals and assists. He tallied three goals on 27 shots, and matched the team-high with seven assists, starting in every match for Azusa Pacific. The Lake Forest native had a season-high two assists in the Cougars’ 5-2 victory over Hope International, and logged goals against PacWest champion Grand Canyon (Ariz.), Biola, and Holy Names. He finished his career with seven goals and 10 assists.
Bulut tallied team-highs in goals (11) and assists (7) en route to earning All-American honors. He finished in sixth overall in the PacWest in scoring at 29 points, and his four game-winning goals ranked second in the conference. He registered five points in a match three times, and registered the game-winning goal against CBU on Sept. 21. He logged 20 points in a seven-match scoring stretch from Sept. 13 to Oct. 11.
Senior keeper Joe Geletko and Steven Shiokari received NCCAA Scholar-Athlete recognition for their work in the classroom.
