AZUSA, Calif. -- It had been enduring one of the longest scoring droughts in program history, but Azusa Pacific opened the floodgates in a big way Saturday night with a 6-0 win over Christian Heritage.

Not since 1988 when they were held scoreless for 6 straight matches have the Cougars gone 3 games without a goal. That streak was laid to rest tonight as the Cougars also picked up their first GSAC win of the campaign.

Chandler Harris scored his first 2 goals of the season and had an assist, and it was his goal that finally broke the ice. He carried the ball down the left side and sent a cross into the box that ricocheted off a Hawk defender and into the net in the 24th minute.

The goal not only gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead, but it broke a scoreless streak that spanned 336 minutes, and it sparked an onslaught that lasted for most of the night.

Azusa Pacific out-shot the Hawks, 28-3, and controlled play for the entire game. Ian Leibbrandt scored his team-leading sixth and seventh goals of the season. His sixth goal of the year came off a Harris assist to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the 43rd minute.

Harris then scored 9 minutes into the second half with a beautiful shot from the left side that just tucked inside the near post. Exactly 2 minutes later Leibbrandt made it 4-0 when he took a long service from Justin Kari that Richie Craven touched through. Leibbrandt touched it once to his left and beat the keeper to the near post.

Donny Dequine and Dustin McBride each got their first goals of the year to round out the scoring. Dequine scored his in the 64th minute when he turned the ball towards the middle of field from the right side and sent a curling ball from about 25 yards out off the crossbar and into the net.

McBride rounded out the scoring in the 83rd minute off an assist from Andrew Hulen.

The Cougars’ 6-goal outburst is the second such performance against Christian Heritage. Last season, the Cougars downed the Hawks, 7-2, in both teams’ season finale in El Cajon.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 7-5 overall, 1-3 GSAC. Christian Heritage drops to 3-8, 0-4.
