AZUSA, Calif. -- Vanguard’s David McAulay scored in the 84th minute to lift the Lions to a 1-0 GSAC victory over visiting Azusa Pacific Saturday.

With the game scoreless in the final minutes, Vanguard’s Nate Kramer launched a throw-in into the box, which the Cougars failed to clear. All-GSAC Matt Hess then took control and dropped it to McAulay at the top of the box, who then beat Cougar GK Morgan Cathey for the goal.

The Lions out-shot the Cougars, 16-7, for the game. Cathey collected 7 saves.

As has been the case for most of the GSAC season, the Cougars found themselves with a handful of prime scoring chances only to come up empty. The loss is the Cougars’ third 1-0 setback in GSAC action this year. Of their 4 losses, the Cougars have been outscored just 5-0.

With the loss, Azusa Pacific drops to 8-6 overall, 2-4 GSAC. Vanguard improves to 12-4, 5-1.
