Azusa Pacific 2
Point Loma Nazarene 0
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Ian Leibbrandt scored a pair of goals to lift Azusa Pacific to a season-ending 2-0 win over Point Loma Nazarene Saturday in San Diego.
With the win, Azusa Pacific, which finished the season winning 5 of its last 7, concludes its season at 11-7 overall, 5-5 in the GSAC, good for sixth place. This is the Cougars’ tenth straight winning campaign.
Leibbrandt broke free in the tenth minute to score the game’s first goal off an assist by Dustin McBride. GK Julian Cottrell made 5 saves in the first 45 minutes to protect the Cougars’ 1-0 lead at the intermission.
Just 47 seconds into the second half, Leibbrandt found open space again and converted his second goal of the game, an unassisted tally, to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage. Morgan Cathey, who substituted for Cottrell, collected 4 saves to preserve the Cougars’ sixth shutout of the season.
Despite getting outshot, 19-10, including an 11-4 tally in the second half, the Cougar defense rose to the occasion to post its third shutout in GSAC action.
Leibbrandt’s goals were the 12th and 13th goals of the season, a new career-high. It is also the most goals scored by a Cougar since Jason Roufs scored 15 goals in 1998, and it is the second straight year in which Leibbrandt led the team. He now has 51 career points, which ranks 16th on Azusa Pacific’s career chart.
