CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The NAIA's No. 5-ranked Azusa Pacific defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 4-0, on Wednesday, Sept. 7, to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Senior Ian Leibbrandt, who earlier in the day was named NAIA Player of the Week, got the Cougars off to a quick start with a goal in the 6th minute. It was Leibbrandt's seventh goal of the season. The game then bogged down offensively for the Cougars who did not break the game open until midway through the second half.
However, the tide turned in the second half. Andriy Budnyy scored twice and Richie Craven added a goal, as the seniors gave support to a defense that has been stellar thus far in 2005. Goalkeeper Morgan Cathey recorded his second shutout of the season. Defenders Mark Peters, Jared Karkas, Damon Brooks and Matt Kristoff limited the Sagehens to only a couple of serious chances. Even then, Cathey turned them away.
Budnyy's fifth goal of the season came in the 60th minute. He whistled a shot into the lower left corner of the net after slipping past a defender. Exactly 10 minutes later, he scored again to give the Cougars a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Craven's first goal since Sept. 26, 2003 provided Azusa Pacific with its final margin of victory.
Azusa Pacific will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Azusa Square in the Cougars' home opener.
