Women's Soccer Title Rematch Slated

Thu., Jun. 28, 2007

AZUSA, Calif. -- The Azusa Pacific women’s soccer program will visit defending NAIA champion Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in mid-September to set up a regular-season meeting between the NAIA powers for the fourth straight season. The game will be a rematch of the 2006 NAIA Women’s Soccer title game, and the Cougars will also take on 2006 NAIA Tournament participant Lee (Tenn.) at Lindsey Wilson’s campus in Columbia, Ky., part of a tentative 16-match 2007 regular season schedule released today.

Azusa Pacific’s run to the 2006 title game included a semifinal victory over Concordia (Ore.), and the Cougars will also host a regular-season rematch of that playoff meeting in the season opener on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 3:30 p.m.

In all, Azusa Pacific’s 6 non-conference opponents combined for 98 victories in 2006, posting a combined .785 winning percentage.

After a visit to Cal State Dominguez Hills, on Tuesday, Aug. 28, the Cougars return home for a pair of home games against second-year program Cal State San Marcos and Graceland (Iowa), which went 17-1-1 in 2006 and narrowly missed the NAIA Tournament after suffering a shootout defeat to McKendree (Ill.) in the NAIA Region V championship.

Then it’s on to Columbia, Ky., the home of the defending NAIA champs. The opponents are familiar in Lee and Lindsey Wilson, as the Cougars have played both teams in each of the past 2 seasons on visits to Lindsey Wilson in 2005 and Lee in 2006. This year’s schedule pits Azusa Pacific against Lee on Friday, Sept. 14, with a matchup against Lindsey Wilson on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Cougar men will be joining the women’s soccer program that weekend, taking on Cumberlands (Ky.) and host Lindsey Wilson.

After the trip to Kentucky, the Cougars will host the Saturday, Sept. 22 Alumni game before kicking off Golden State Athletic Conference play on Sept. 26 at Fresno Pacific. The conference home opener is Saturday, Sept. 29, when San Diego Christian visits in the first of 3 straight home contests. Westmont, another 2006 NAIA Tournament foe for Azusa Pacific, visits Azusa Pacific on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
