AZUSA, Calif.-- The Azusa Pacific women’s soccer team was selected to repeat as the Pacific West Conference champions, receiving 11 of the 13 first place votes to land atop the PacWest preseason coaches’ poll. The Cougars, who won the program’s first-ever NCAA Division II conference title en route to a National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) championship, tallied 167 points in the poll, with California Baptist (156) garnering the No. 2 spot with two first place votes.
Point Loma, which is the only program in the conference with more than one win against the Cougars over the past two seasons, took third in the poll with 131 points, while BYU-Hawaii (120) and Dixie State (114) rounded out the top-five.
Azusa Pacific had four players named to the 2014 preseason All-PacWest team, and the reigning National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s NCCAA Coach of the Year, Jason Surrell, was chosen as the preseason PacWest Coach of the Year.
Leading the Cougars’ preseason honors is 2013 PacWest Freshman of the Year, Sarah Klinkenberg, who was named the preseason Goalkeeper of the Year. Two Azusa Pacific midfielders were selected to the All-PacWest team, with Mayra Almazan, the 2013 NCCAA Player of the Year, and Allyn Brown selected to repeat their 2013 first-team all-conference honors. Defender, Logan Chan was the lone Cougar senior named to the All-PacWest team.
California Baptist’s Kimberly Allard is the preseason Player of the Year, while CBU’s Silvia Sanchez was named the preseason Defender of the Year.
Azusa Pacific will kick off the regular season with a home match against Sonoma State on Sept. 4, before hosting Cal State Stanislaus and Western Washington in back-to-back matches.
