AZUSA, Calif. -- Sophomore Erin Arbizu scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season just 4 minutes into overtime lifting the NAIA's No. 4-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Vanguard.
The Cougars are now 5-1 overall, 2-0 GSAC, while Vanguard, which handed Concordia its first loss of the season earlier this week, drops to 4-4-1, 1-1 GSAC.
After a scoreless first 90 minutes, Arbizu teamed up with junior All-GSAC Heather Hannemann for the fourth time in the past 2 games. Arbizu collected the ball in the middle of the field, then fed Hannemann at the top of the 18-yard box. Hannemann one-touched right back to Arbizu, who completed her run by burying the ball into the lower left corner of the net.
Azusa Pacific peppered Lions' GK Jordan Fredriksen with shots all night, outshooting Vanguard, 23-9, including 16-3 in the second half and overtime period. However, none found the net, until Arbizu finally broke through. Fredriksen ended with 11 saves. Cougar All-American GK Melissa Strother finished with 4 saves for her second straight shutout.
Azusa Pacific hosts Biola Wednesday night in Azusa at 7 p.m.
